湘雅医院始建于1906年，初名雅礼医院，是由湖南育群学会和美国雅礼协会合作创办，是我国最早的西医院之一，享有“南湘雅”之盛誉。1978年，划归国家卫生部直管， 1992年获湖南省首批三级甲等医院。2000年，中南大学合并组建，医院更名为中南大学湘雅医院。历经百年发展，现已成为国家卫生部直管，集医疗、教学、科研于一体的现代化大型综合性医院，是我国重要的医疗诊治、医学教育和医学研究中心。编制床位达到3500张。

    湘雅遵循 “公勇勤慎、诚爱谦廉、求真求确、必邃必专”的湘雅校训，秉承“严谨、团结、求实、进取”的湘雅精神，造就了张孝骞、汤飞凡、李振翩等一大批在国内外有影响的医学专家。1992年，中国邮政首次发行4枚现代科学家纪念邮票，其中两名医学科学家为张孝骞和汤飞凡。张孝骞，湘雅医院第三任院长，我国著名内科学家、医学教育家、中国消化病学的奠基人，在医学界有“内科全才”之称。汤飞凡，著名微生物学家、免疫学家，世界“衣原体之父”，第一个成功分离沙眼病毒，获得诺贝尔奖提名。

    湘雅治学严谨，临床教学特色突出。在全国医学院校本科生五次联考中，湘雅均名列第一。医院拥有国家国家级教学团队和国家级教名师。近年来， “临床诊断学”、“神经病学”、 “传染病学”、“临床麻醉学”、“耳鼻咽喉头颈外科学”等5门课程为国家级精品课程，是全国拥有国家级精品课程最多的医院。

    百年湘雅医疗服务技术力量雄厚。有临床医疗、医技科室51个。医院现有主任医师196人，副主任医师231人。

    国家临床重点建设专科11个：骨科学（包括脊柱外科）、重症医学科、病理学、护理专科、麻醉学科、耳鼻咽喉科、神经外科、中医脑病科、心血管内科、血液内科、口腔颌面外科，居全国医院前列。

    医院年门、急诊量达到200万人次，年出院病人9万余人次，年大中型手术近6万余台次；每年开展医疗新技术数十项。湘雅医院在多种颅内肿瘤的显微手术治疗、鼻咽癌诊治、心脑血管疾病诊治、血液疾病治疗、多种内镜微创手术治疗、器官移植等方面居国内领先地位。

    湘雅医院科学研究在国内占有较高的学术地位。拥有国家重点建设学科5个：神经病学、耳鼻咽喉科学、普通外科学、胸外科学、内分泌科学。医院有研究所4个，卫生部重点实验室和研究中心3个，一级博士授予点2个，卫生部研究培训中心3个。拥有博士导师106  名，硕士生导师174名。近10年来，共招收研究生3641名,其中博士生1246名,硕士生2395名。已毕业的博士生876名,硕士生1890名。

    “十二五”的开局之年，获国家自然科学基金57项，中标经费达2700万元，位列进入全国同级别医疗机构第一方阵。近5年来中标科研项目1200余项，获得“863”、“973”、和国家重大支撑计划项目20余项。医院发表在中国科技论文统计源期刊上的科研论文数量连续多年稳居全国同类医院前列。

    2010年，全国公立医院社位贡献度排名，位居全国第五。医院相继荣获全国卫生系统先进集体、全国百家医院、全国科普工作先进集体、全国行风建设先进集体、全国卫生系统护理巾帼文明岗、全国百姓放心示范医院等多种荣誉称号。

　    Brief Introduction

    Xiangya Hospital of Central South University was one of the earliest hospitals of Western medicine established by Yale-China Association and named Yale-China Hospital in 1906. In the year 1913 the Yuqun Association of Hunan Province authorized by Hunan Provincial Government and Yale-China Association organized the “Xiangya Medical Association” and established Xiangya Medical College (now renamed Xiangya School of Medicine) in the following year. In February 1915 Yale-China Hospital was renamed Xiangya Hospital, and became the teaching hospital affiliated to Xiangya Medical College. On October 18, 1915 the hospital moved to the place where the hospital is now located. In the spring of 1918 the hospital building was completed; it owned 120 beds and the best hospital building in China at that time. In the year 1942 the hospital building and facilities were destroyed by Japanese air strike. When Chinese people won the anti-Japanese war in August 1945, the hospital was rebuilt at the same site, and the number of the beds was increased to 250. On December 8, 1951 Xiangya Hospital was taken over by the People’s Government, and was affiliated to Xiangya Medical College officially. On October 1, 1953 Xiangya Medical College was renamed Hunan Medical College, and Xiangya Hospital changed its name to the Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Medical College. At that time the hospital had 460 beds, 220,000 out-patients, and 6,000 in-patients per year, the number of which was the largest in China. In October 1958 the Second Affiliated Hospital was founded, so the hospital was renamed the First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Medical College. In May 1978 Hunan Medical College entered the governing system of the Ministry of Health, and was renamed Hunan Medical University in December 1978. The hospital was renamed the First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Medical University and had 760 beds. In 1992 the hospital was renamed Xiangya Hospital. The hospital entered a period of rapid development, 3500 beds are put in use right now, and the hospital was rated Tertiary-A Hospital, which was among the first of its kind in Hunan province. When the Central South University was established through mergence of 3 universities including Hunan Medical University in the year 2000, the hospital was renamed Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. Now Xiangya is 100 years old. In 100 years, Xiangya people have served the public health sincerely despite all the hardships and difficulties and fostered Xiangya spirit of “preciseness, integrity, unity and enterprising”. The hospital is reputed both in China and abroad for its strict management, excellent leechcraft and outstanding talents. As a large number of modern medical masters and famous medical experts such as Zhang Xiaoqian, Tang Feifan and Li Zhenpian were cultivated and working here, Xiangya was made famous by the saying: “ Xiangya is the best in South (China)”.

    Through trials and hardships of a hundred years, Xiangya Hospital of Central South University has become a large-scale modernized comprehensive hospital integrating medical treatment, education and scientific research, and an important center of medical treatment, education and research under the direct administration of Ministry of Health. The hospital now covers an area of over 210 Mu, over 1,500 beds available for patients, over 2,100 registered employees, of which 84.7% are professionals and technicians, and 350 employees have titles higher than associate professor or its equivalent. In the hospital there are 51 clinical departments, 4 research institutes, 2 key labs of the Ministry of Health, and 3 research & training centers of the Ministry of Health. Currently the hospital has total capital assets of 1.5 billion Yuan, among them the equipments’ value exceeds 300 million Yuan. The hospital has the large modern medical equipments such as Gamma Knife, DSA, CT, linear accelerator and magnetic resonance. Every year the hospital has over 1.3 million outpatients and ER patients, and over 50,000 inpatients, over 30,000 operations. The hospital develops over 100 new treatment techniques annually, and it leads China in the treatments including organ transplantation, large-area burn treatment, excision of base-of-skull brain tumors, endoscopy & minimally invasive therapy, hematological diseases, nasopharynx cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The clinic medicine and the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine are first level disciplines authorized to grant doctorate degree and post-doctor stations. Currently the hospital has 71 doctorate supervisors, 57 of them are on the job, and 138 master supervisors. By the end of 2005, the hospital has cultivated 528 doctors and 969 masters, and has trained the international students from many countries and regions. The hospital offers training to over 2,000 students of other kinds of education every year. The hospital enjoys good reputation in clinical education and has a number of medical educators well known in China From the year 1984, the hospital has borne over 1,800 scientific research projects at provincial or above levels, of which over 130 are at national level. The hospital has made over 290 scientific research achievements, of which 4 won the National Scientific & technological Progress Award. In recent years the hospital has been ranked among Top 10 of the hospitals in China regarding the published papers in source journals for Chinese Scientific and Technological Papers and Citations. Xiangya faculty maitains close academic relations with colleagues in over 20 counries and regions including the United States, Japan and France etc, and its comprehensive competence ranked at top level.
